This year marks 5 years of an ongoing mission for the official recognition of the 8th May as Ancestor’s Day in South Africa. Let’s pour one out for the Ones who came before us, those whose names we carry.

A man of wisdom. Basotho chief, and mentor to King Moshoeshoe I. Mohlomi taught King Moshoeshoe that true leadership is built on peace, generosity and justice. He rejected war and was said to have built free lodges in his territories, for travellers. Shaping the Basotho kingdom with diplomacy and kindness instead of war
Hamilton Naki, a self-taught medical genius, worked as an assistant to Dr. Christiaan Barnard, the man credited with performing the world’s first heart transplant. Naki was not formally recognised for his groundbreaking surgical contributions until much later. His talent saved lives, even when history tried to erase his name.
Queen Losha, discovered at Thulamela in South Africa, was buried with gold jewellery a sign of her noble status. Her respectful posture, known as "losha," symbolised her high rank in the Venda culture. The site revealed a sophisticated society engaged in long-distance trade, with artifacts like Chinese porcelain proving global connections. Her legacy highlights the richness and sophistication of ancient African civilisations.
After her husband’s death, Queen Mmanthatisi led the Batlokwa people through the chaos of the Mfecane wars. She commanded thousands with brilliant strategy and diplomacy, securing her people’s survival. Known for her intelligence and resilience, she earned fear and respect across Southern Africa. Unlike many, she sought peace through negotiation but fought fiercely when needed. Her legacy lives on as one of Africa’s greatest female leaders.
Sekhukhune’s kingdom was a hub of ironworking and trade. He encouraged his people to refine metal-smelting techniques, making them self-sufficient and skilled in craftsmanship. His leadership wasn’t just about defence it was about building an economy that thrived on knowledge and innovation.
